Why is it so hard to transform HR?

Is it getting easier or harder to get business leaders to support HR’s transformation? There’s some worrying data. I’d welcome your own thoughts.

You’d think it should be getting easier, after the epic efforts of HR teams across the world, keeping their businesses going.

Have HR’s achievements during the pandemic helped them to rise up as strategic partners in the business, or pulled them down further into the reactive cycle that they’ve been fighting for years?

In our own research with HR people on HR’s reputation in 2021
(see report here), responses were mixed, often depending on sector. For those who were struggling, the reasons they gave included:
– Time
– Workload
– Seen as an admin function
– Business leaders’ lack of support
– Their own HR leaders’ lack of leadership.

All of these issues drive each other into a downward spiral that’s tough to stop.

Dave Ulrich’s recent research on how CEOs evaluate HR says HR’s credibility is getting worse rather than better. He gave some gloomy news about a downturn for the first time in decades.
See article here.

The data is telling us we’ve got a battle on our hands.

How does it feel when you can’t lift your head to take breath, never mind think about transforming your team?

How can you put up a fight when you’re exhausted and feeling frustrated by lack of respect?

If this resonates, get in touch. I’ll listen and help you clarify what’s happening for you.

We have created clear steps for you to transform HR and will help you make the business case.

I’m getting great feedback on my book ‘Empowering HR’. It’s on Amazon and other good bookstores.
