Transforming your HR function? Where do you start?

When you’ve decided you want to transform your HR function it can be hard to work out where to start. Your organisation is unique, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all formula.

This list of actions from Dave Ulrich is so practical and completely resonates with the work we’re doing with clients.

I’m sure all these steps will be on your to-do list, while the path towards achieving them may be less clear.

In the work we do with clients, we find the answers to two core questions:

  1. How do we engage business leaders in a new way so that they will embrace strategic partnering with us?
  2. How do we fully engage our HR team and challenge their thinking about how we can create more value for our stakeholders?

Once we’ve helped the HR leader to become clear about what they want to achieve, there are a couple of interventions that deliver proven results:

  • We take the HR team along a journey of understanding about the realities of their business, open up their thinking and generate a fresh vision of what HR are there for and how to deliver more together;
  • We create opportunities to get HR leaders into the same room as business leaders for a different kind of conversation – we call these ‘Alignment Workshops’.

An organised, measurable and sequenced plan of actions falls out of the priorities that emerge.

In this way, it isn’t about doing it TO your HR team, it’s about doing it WITH them.
