‘Deliver stakeholder value through human capability’
Dave Ulrich
‘Deliver stakeholder value through human capability’ is a concise definition of HR from Dave Ulrich. It’s really valuable to sum up HR’s work in a phrase, and this captures it.
In Dave’s latest newsletter, he summarises his research on the recent focus of prominent organisations in our HR world – associations and consultancies. What struck me was the variation – ranging across leadership, culture, talent, ethics, many more and of course AI. Naturally, a consultancy firm is going to focus on the topic that leads people to their services. Professional associations are likely to be more objective.
That range made me reflect on how hard it is for the CPO to decide upon their particular priorities. Many in my community are pushed and pulled in so many directions it can be hard to take a breath.
It’s the link between human capability and how it can drive stakeholder value – within the context of your particular organisation – that’s so crucial. Taking time to pinpoint that will, in turn, lead to better use of time and resources.
This involves deepening our understanding of our organisation’s business model, and how value is created. Then you can become much more clear about which HR activities will contribute most effectlvely to business outcomes – and stakeholder value – and articulate that to senior leaders.
I’ve got a really practical tool called the HR Success Model that enables you to map that out – if you’re a senior HR leader wanting more clarity, contact me for a complimentary session to build yours.
The HRBP is critical in this drive to deliver the most important outcomes to stakeholders.
