How has this crisis affected our sense of purpose at work? Has it strengthened our commitment to what we do, or left us feeling less connected? I’d say the jury’s out. HR leaders understand – and can leverage – all the drivers of engagement, and now’s a great time to prove it.
‘Purpose is the new strategy’, say Korn Ferry in a recent report (link here). ‘During this crisis, we have seen the power of purpose in uniting workforces.’
Strategic purpose is a great asset if you’re in a genuinely people- or planet-enhancing sector. However, let’s face it, most people aren’t, and there’s more reality-checking and even cynicism around as people are reconnecting with what truly matters in life.
Purpose can be close to home. Research proves that our most powerful connections are with our managers, leaders and colleagues. It’s the immediate challenges of coping and surviving that are pulling people together in our current, gritty, reality.
HR are dealing with endless legal, operational and human challenges. There has never been greater need for HR’s strategic insight and capabilities, too, to drive purpose and engagement.
Let’s ensure that HR is well positioned, at every level, to fully lead as we rebuild for the future.
