It all starts with getting the data right
Bringing people data together into one clear, reliable dashboard is achievable. It starts with getting the data right.
Most organisations already have the data, spread across HRIS, recruitment, engagement and performance systems. The challenge is not access, it is getting it into good enough shape to use. If the data going in is inconsistent, incomplete or manually adjusted, the dashboard will never quite be trusted. And once trust is lost, the value disappears.
A few simple principles make a big difference:
- Start with raw exports: Avoid “helpfully” reworked files. Every manual tweak creates risk and makes updates harder next time.
- Keep structures consistent: Column names, formats and layouts should not change between uploads. Stability here is what makes automation possible.
- Use a single reference point for people: Employee ID matters more than name or email. It is the only reliable way to join data across systems over time.
- Be clear on dates: Most people metrics depend on timing. Hire dates, termination dates and effective dates need to be clean and usable.
- Design for repeatability: If updating the data feels like a chore each time, the model is not set up properly. The goal is simple: drop in new data, refresh, done.
The technical build matters, but it is not where this succeeds or fails. If the data is not consistent, complete and trusted, the dashboard will not be used. And if it is not used, it has no value. That is why the upfront work matters most.
