HR faces fundamental dilemmas every day
This is a great matrix from Gartner as it clarifies one of the fundamental dilemmas that HR faces day-to-day – providing robust services while also pushing forward in the strategic direction.
For the HRBP, both challenges are contained within the same role.
How does this play out in your role? Headless chicken or strategic swan?
It can work really well in one respect – for example, to have the same person handling individual recruitment projects who can also relate this to anticipated future talent needs because they (hopefully) have the manpower plan and a longer term strategy.
On the other hand, where resources are limited it’s likely that the short-term demands (like getting a bum on a seat) will overpower the longer term considerations and not leave the time for the conversation about the future.
HR Business Partnering is pivotal in this short-term long-term dynamic in HR, and therefore in getting the maximum ROI from HR’s resources.
