How to get HR functions working as one united team

Some HR functions get in their own way – distance creeps in between teams and they work at cross purposes. It’s demotivating and a waste of resources.

Here’s what I see happening:

  1. Business problems don’t tend to fall neatly into HR specialisms – yet CoE solutions are driven by their expertise – OD, TA, reward, etc. The business need might be productivity, risk or revenue, but programs get rolled out that don’t appear to relate to those.
  2. HRBPs are often the people with the best understanding of what the business really needs, and yet they’re not asked to share their insight. Instead they end up having to ‘sell in’ programs that they don’t actually believe in.
  3. Shared Services often struggle with old tech, processes and expectations and don’t get the opportunity to demonstrate what’s possible.

We’re often asked how to get HR functions working as one united team. In essence, we achieve this by getting them lined up behind business priorities. They find this inspiring and rewarding, and it naturally pulls them together.
