How can HR pick themselves up and accept a calling as leaders?

Let’s turn HR around – in terms of visible impact, and also in terms of direction.

It’s easy for HR to point in the wrong direction, towards safety, compliance, risk and its legacy of administration. So much has changed in recent years, and now is the time to change that direction.

There are intellectual challenges in that, surely – thinking through what it will take to change activities and processes so that they are driven and led by success and impact rather than by caution.

There are also an emotional challenges – it’s been tough, exhausting and wearing, and turning it around takes courage.

How can HR pick themselves up and accept a calling as leaders?

Many already are, and a lot of the HR leaders I talk to are setting things in motion for exactly that.

The forces that will transform organisations are coming from many directions – AI, changing values, mental health understanding.

The HR function has the expertise and human understanding to lead this so that we get the win-win that is possible now. Profitability (for everyone) and humanity.
